Boys…

Nobody knows what a boy is worth;

We’ll have to wait and see.

But every man in a noble place

A boy once used to be.

(Unknown Author, Quoted by Thomas S. Monson)

Trying to find a talk to write about tonight, I was doing my reading on my ipad while sitting in a dark corner of my son’s bedroom waiting for him to fall asleep. I couldn’t leave him unsupervised. I had tried that today and came up to find him sticking nails into the socket next to his bed. As I read I came across 2 different talks where President Monson quoted this poem.

I think one of the things that I have loved about President Monson in the years since I have become the mother to first one, then two, then THREE wild, energetic boys, is when he tells stories of his childhood. Stories of lighting things on fire and conspiring to drive Sunday School teachers to quit.

Being a mom of boys has been an adjustment for me. I come from a GIRL heavy family and it never occurred to me that I would have all sons and I certainly had no idea what was in store for me when they came. President Monson gives me hope that these boys who do ridiculous things, act without thinking and, though I don’t THINK they are actually conspiring against me or trying to drive me to insanity they may actually be from time to time… they can grow up to be amazing men who influence the world for good. In the meantime I will try to keep them alive and hope that the lessons I teach are getting in there.
